4: Dorm etiquette

My day was very peaceful today after the hectic-ness of yesterday. My day started early with a goodbye to Renee who is on her way up to Newfoundland. After saying farewell I got stuck into some brekky and then spent the morning doing some hard core work on my blog.

Lunch rolled around and I decided to get off my backside and get myself down to the supermarket for some fresh rolls for lunch and some veges and meat for dinner. I think stir fry might be on the menu for this evening.

By the time dinner time rolled around (you can tell when I have a slow day/ spend the whole day on my laptop because the only thing I blog about is what I ate for the day!) I was ready to cook up a storm. I ended up making my signature beef stir fry dish and offered to share some of my meal with two of the other ladies in the hostel. Both of which turned out to be vegetarians… Their loss and my gain! One of them was hungry though so she decided to have my meal anyhow and discovered that the beef wasn’t too bad after all… Maybe I’ve turned one of the vegos back into a “normal” person. I don’t mean that in a derogatory way but what do you actually call someone who eats both meat and veges??

Considering I really have nothing to blog about I thought I’d recount a story that was told to me this morning about another member of the hostel. A bit of background to the story- the central figure to this story is an Aussie lady, is middle aged (I’d guess between late 40s and early 60s), is travelling by herself, is staying in an 8 bed dorm room and is slightly eccentric. She decided last night to do her trip planning at 3am in the morning! She turned on her bedside reading lamp, grabbed out her maps and guide books and started to plan her trip. Meanwhile everyone else in the dorm has been woken up by her night time plans and rightfully asks her to pls go and plan somewhere else (common room springs to mind). To which she rudely declines.. Now, I’m not a smart lady but I would have thought it was pretty obvious that if you are staying in a room with 8 other women you would be fairly considerate and if you are having trouble sleeping maybe go and do your activities elsewhere? Apparently this isn’t a universal thought! An hour and a half later, and I can only imagine how many conversations back and forth the lady begrudgingly left the room for the common room… There were some grumpy ladies down at brekky this morning let me tell you!

  1. I would be more than grumpy what a sense of entitlement to do what you want at everybody else’s expense! She needs a very big wake up! And she just might get more than she bargained for as she has to go to sleep the next night!
