2: Beers and People Watching

17.05.2013 – 17.05.2013 semi-overcast 20 °C

I left yesterday’s blog with the earth shattering announcement that I had fallen asleep before we had even taxied to the run way. I woke a few hours later to discover that Nanna hadn’t worked out how to use her tv and of course, was too polite to ask the hosties. Got Nanna sorted (she explained that she’d had a nice meal and that I’d missed out, after all of the food I had already consumed I wasn’t too stressed!), took a sleeping pill and put myself back to sleep. Actually, I managed to get almost six hours sleep on this flight and when I finally woke it was to discover light streaming in the three windows next to Nanna.

Astronomical ClockUnfortunately, Nanna hadn’t twigged that although it was mid morning for our body clocks it was not even 4am for the majority of our fellow passengers and that it might not be a great idea to open up all the windows. After a quick inventory of the dirty looks I was receiving from those trying to sleep nearby, I patiently explained to her that most people didn’t want to look at the view (unlike her) and that it would be more appropriate to keep one of the blinds open for her and close up the other two until the main cabin lights came on when we got closer to Helsinki. This done, we both settled in and watched some tv. I fell asleep in Inception so don’t ask me whether its worth seeing!

Breakfast was served, yoghurt with muesli (seventh heaven, European muesli!), croissant and some sort of egg/ quichie thing that got left behind on my plate. Before we knew it, we’d touched down in Helsinki and were again waiting for our next flight.

Charles Bridge, PragueBy now we were seasoned, business passengers so we found the lounge, settled in and consumed more breakfast! Porridge with a cup of a tea for Nanna (I was pleased to hear that it is almost as good as the porridge Uncle Barry makes :)) and more muesli with yoghurt for me washed down with a cuppa.

Strangely enough, once on board the flight to Prague we were again served breakfast. This time I just ate the croissant but like a real trouper Nanna was getting her money’s worth in business class and polished off her brekky!

We touched down just after 11am, got our baggage, filled our wallets with Czech Krowns and headed for the tourist info to find out how to get into town. Best option with Nanna was to get a transfer to our hotel, and for less than 20 dollars each I thought this was a pretty good deal. George our driver spoke really good English and even offered to cut a cheap deal for picking up Aunty Barb and Tania.. That’d be right.. we pay full price but he will do them at a discount!!! 🙂

Old Town Square, PragueAfter checking in (we actually got dropped at the wrong hotel- luckily they pointed us in the right direction) and cleaning up we headed out for Nanna’s first glimpse of Prague. We have fortunately picked one of the best places in Prague to stay.. Hotel wise it is ok but location wise you won’t get better for the price! At the end of our street is the main thoroughfare to the Charles Bridge and the town square. So we firstly headed out to the bridge and eventually made our way back down to the market square.

By now, both of us were starting to feel really weary. So I suggested we grab a table on the market square, grab ourselves a beer and a snack and just sit and people watch. It was so pleasant to sit in the sunshine (weather today is slightly overcast, temp around 20 deg) and just watch the thousands of tourists thronging through the square gawking at the impressive baroque architecture. By 4pm both Nanna and I were nodding in our cups (literally!) so we knew it was time to head back to the hotel and hit the sack. By 5.30 I was tucked up in bed, and by 5.31 I was out like a light!Beers on Market Square, Prague

Cuisine of the Day– Honey Beer consumed in the main town square (not sure if the beer itself contains honey but it is really quite nice!)
