3: Illuminating arrival day

18.05.2013 – 18.05.2013 semi-overcast 17 °C

Gorgeous PragueI was bright and cheery at the illuminating time of 3am! Yep, jet lag had kicked in well and truly! Anyway, I did a lot of tossing and turning, emailing, reading my book until it was brekky time at 8am. I had decided to not make a start on the day because this morning it is raining! Not a nice light rain but a pretty constant stream.

The hotel brekky was pretty top notch- crepes, cereal, toast and tea.. Not a bad start to the day! The crepes here are interesting, I was expecting a flat pancake style smothered in jam… On delivery, my plate was adorned with a big fat donut style pancake smothered in the tastiest jam. Not sure what type of jam but super delicious- maybe a berry mixture? Either way, jam was fab… crepe was well, a jam donut.. so probably not my favourite brekky meal but certainly not the worst!

Nanna and I bundled ourselves up in our rain gear and braved the weather about 9.30. We took a short stroll down to the Charles Bridge and gawked at some antique stores by the river and eventually made our way to a little back street café where we enjoyed a cappucinio and hot choc. By the time our morning tea was over it was well past 11am and we had received a txt from my Aunt to tell me that they had arrived in Prague.

The Team!I was very impressed with how my Aunt and Uncle were looking this morning, both very much awake and looking refreshed (better than I looked this time the day before!!) We both swapped stories about our flights before my A&U decided to freshen up whilst we waited for my cousin to arrive. A good story that is worth recounting is my A&U’s transfer story in Singapore. Both flew with Singapore and on arrival in Singapore went to the main service desk in the transfer area to ask about where they could buy a shower, get food etc. It turns out that they both were entitled to a forty dollar transfer voucher allowing them to have free showers and even buy some aftershave! Not sure the details of why they were entitled to the voucher.. Unclear whether you need to be flying Singapore or whether it is an across the board forty dollar credit but certainly worth asking if you are next flying long haul to Europe and travelling via Singapore.

My cousin arrived thirty minutes later with her luggage missing. Apparently her luggage hadn’t made the transfer from her flight from Dubai to London to her new flight from London to Prague. As she said to me, she had made the transfer so why on earth couldn’t her bag? To be really honest I was impressed with her attitude, one bag missing (and no real chance to put on fresh clothes) but still just happy to be here! I would have been cursing from here to Sydney!! (Well I probably would have been internally cursing, I probably wouldn’t have outwardly complained.. maybe that was T’s secret!)

Charles Bridge, PragueAnyway, my travelling party was now complete and with lunch just around the corner I lead my tour group out into the jam packed streets of Prague. Jam packed is the word! Holy smokes, the tourist crowds must have tripled today with us having to almost push our way through the pedestrian jams!! I took them down to the Charles Bridge and then back thru the streets to the main square for some lunch. N and I had spied some yummy smoked ham that smelt amazing and was just waiting to be devoured for lunch so I made a bee line for the smoke houses. As it turned out, the ham was great but the smoked sausage was truly heavenly.. You just can’t buy sausages like the type you get here in Europe!

By the time lunch became a memory, the wind had really picked up and we were all sitting in the shade really feeling the cold so we got our muscles moving and again moved out into the streets of Prague for some more site seeing. I lead my little band of wanderers through the side streets of Prague and down into the Jewish area of Prague where we discovered everything closed for the Saturday! By now everyone’s feet were starting to ache so we gave up the touring and started to make our way back to our hotel for an hour long rest. After our hour, we shared some pizza for dinner and by 9pm we were all tucked up in our beds asleep!

Another beautiful day in Prague!

And yep, T’s bags turned up just before midnight so come tomorrow she at least has the chance for some clean underwear!

Cuisine of the Day– Crepes, donut style!
