For the first time ever I’m going to do little typing and lots of photo shots. I normally don’t upload too many photos purely because it takes so long via the internet… This time is the exception to the rule because today I fulfilled one of my life goals~ to see the Namib Desert in all of its glory.
Today was supposed to be ballooning day, it turned out to be the best day ever without ballooning! Just before midnight a howling wind blew up and kept me awake all night.. howling winds means no ballooning. However, because we’d decided to get up early anyhow we drove ourselves into Soussevlei to see the sand dunes wake up with the sun rise….
And did they wake up~ soft pinks and purples, turned to oranges, to reds and to the deepest blue sky ever… Absolutely spectacular and a definite day that will never be forgotten.
The drive is along a tarmac road down to Soussevlei- stopping as frequently or not as you wish to take photos. The sand dunes stretch for miles in both directions but the river (no water at the moment) allows safe passage between two huge “sand ranges” that spread on either side of the river.
At the end of the drive you park your car, jump in a transfer and hike into the Dead Vlei~ an absolute killer– hiking through soft sand up dunes in 35+ deg heat.. there were a few times when I seriously considered turning around but the lure of money shot photos kept me going….
