12: Driving, driving, driving

21.09.2012 – 21.09.2012 rain 16 °C

I had a big day today! It started early with me heading to the physio for another session to try and fix my neck once and for all. I found that it was a lot more responsive this morning (before the treatment) and I was able to put up with a lot more manipulation than what I was able to tolerate the day before. I walked out with it still tender but under assurances that it would settle down, I just needed to give it time!

All sounding good!! So from the physio I rushed back to the hostel to give one of the other members of the hostel a lift to the bus station (its raining and cold again this morning and the bus station is a mile away from the hostel). After dropping off Sarah at the terminal I hit the road out of Charlottetown heading for the Ferry Terminal at Wood Island bound for Nova Scotia.

There are two main ways to get on and off PEI, drive over the Confederation Bridge (which I did when I arrived) or take the ferry to Pictou in Nova Scotia. Neither option is cheap (its free to come over but costs you to go back) and of course I chose the most expensive option!! After parting with seventy dollars I was on board the boat and on my way back to NS. The ferry crossing itself was very underwhelming, but an interesting fact is that the waterway between NS and PEI is completely covered in ice during the winter! In the old days they used to drive across the ice!!! Today you drive across the Confederation Bridge! J

Once back on the mainland (and back in NS) I started the long drive up to Cape Breton Island. Today’s drive was one big drive on a freeway, so not super exciting. The weather was nasty, raining and windy so visibility was low.. 🙁 Cape Breton is famous for its natural beauty. From what little I could see this afternoon it is dotted with lakes and covered in big mountain peaks and so many forests! I guess I’ve got a good ten days to discover its beauty so I’ll get a great idea of what it offers. I stopped late that evening (around 8pm) in Sydney NS at a local motel. I’ll start the trek up to the Cape tomorrow!

  1. I like there revenue raising idea of letting you come over for free and charging you to go back. This govt could learn a lot from them 🙂 I personally think crossing on the ice would be way more fun then the boring old bridge!
