51: Closed walkways

22.05.2012- 22.05.2012 snow  9 °C

We got going pretty early today as we are planning on getting to Calgary this evening and catching up with some of M&Ds friends, Rudy and Jean. First thing, we headed deeper into Waterton NP so that we could actually have a look at some glaciers (if possible). With the weather so ordinary yesterday we were hoping for some improvement today… The day started with the sun shining and the wind blowing a gale, by the time we made it deeper into the park the clouds had completely enveloped the mountains and the snow was falling! At the end of the road, we came across a lake that was still completely frozen. Needless to say, we didn’t bother walking around the lake, the wind was blowing, snow falling.. not pleasant hiking conditions!!

Considering the snow falling, we decided to work our way out of the park and head on up to Calgary. Southern Alberta is one big farm!! In the same vein as Montana, Alberta has thousands of acres of wheat fields that are ringed by distant snow capped mountains… Just gorgeous! It is also super windy in this part of the world (well at least it is today) and so all of the big electric generating windmills are going nuts!! Wheat fields, wind mills and mountains… V Pretty!

I took us north west-ish with us entering the city from the western side. My plan was that by entering the city from this direction we may have been able to see some of the Olympic facilities from ‘88. We couldn’t find the ski fields (although I have a sneaking suspicion that they used Banff) but we did find the luge and ski jumps!! Not super impressive when they aren’t covered in snow! Just big concrete blocks!!!

We finally got to Rudy and Jean’s place late in the afternoon to find that Jean had prepared dinner for us! Not only was it a lovely surprise it was also really tasty!! Thx Jean!

Song of the Day– John Denver, Thank God I’m a country boy!
