52: Founding fathers

31.7.2012 – 31.7.2012 sunny 32 °C

After a nice sleep in and a tasty pastry for brekky we put our bags back in the car and headed back to downtown Atlantic City to check out the rest of the town. The temp was markedly warmer than the evening before, so by the time we had walked the couple of hundred metres down to Caesars we were looking for some air conditioning. Gosh the humidity here is surprising.. I swear it is more humid than Brissie in the middle of Summer…

M had been sucked right in, so we headed from Caesar’s back out into the heat to the outlet mall parked right behind the casinos. I’m not sure how American department stores survive.. every holiday destination here in the States has an adjoining outlet mall, filled with bargains (esp for us Aussies where all clothing, footwear, handbags and general stuff is more than half of the price—in some cases as low as a quarter– of what you’d pay at home). Both M&D bought up big, new shirts and jeans– more clothes to either send home or go to the recyclers! I restrained myself (for once) more because I wasn’t enjoying the outside shopping in the heat!

By the time we had spent our hard earned cash we headed back in doors to find ourselves something for lunch. One tasty salad later (salt and pepper calamari on a bed of rocket and other veges) and we were ready to hit the road for Philadelphia.

The drive back across Jersey into Pennsylvania didn’t take too long and we arrived into Philly late in the afternoon. Accom here in Philly isn’t cheap but we got a reasonable deal on the accom and then got stung by paying the parking….. Why had we come to Philadelphia I hear you ask? Well, Philly is the home to the American Independence Movt. Here the Declaration of Independence was created, agreed to and signed by the colonies of America, soon to be the United States of America. Most of the founding fathers of America all resided here, most notably Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and George Washington and it is where the first “Congresses” of the colonies were held. All in all a pretty great place to stop if you want to learn more about the American Revolution.
