4: Finally…. Garden Route is looking up!

30.03.2016 – 30.03.2016 semi-overcast 24 °C

DSC_0033First things first we headed out to Brenton-on-the-sea, a small sea side town just around the lake from Knysna, hoping against hope that the trip around the lake would be worth it…. And, it was.

Brenton-on-the-sea turned out to be another village perched on the side of some massive cliffs leading down to the sea. Spectacular view from the base of the cliffs and spectacular from the waters edge. Brenton-on-the-sea is a rocky beach so we watched the waves crash against the rocks before we wandered up the beach to stretch the legs.

DSC_0042Most interesting thing happened on the beach~ there were about three to four big dead jelly fishes washed up on shore. That in itself isn’t interesting but the little tiny sand crabs hoeing down was. Millions of these little tiny crabs were moving along the beach to eat the dead jelly fishes. Extraordinary! Every time the water would come in the little crabs would get washed a bit… But as soon as the wave disappeared they’d be back on the march… Nuts!

DSC_0053From Brenton-on-the-sea we headed inland to drive some of the mountain passes. Was fairly non eventful, in fact reminded me so much of driving thru mountains in Au that we actually gave up after only 30mins and headed back to the coast. We weren’t disappointed heading back to the coast. This part of the Garden Route was just like driving any well renowned coastal drives~ big sweeping bends, spectacular cliffs, crashing waves & endless stretches of coastline! Now we’re talking!

We stopped off in the small town of wilderness for lunch~ steak and pepper pie and the yummiest chocolate thickshake i’ve had in the longest time. Wilderness reminded us a bit of Noosa actually. Cute little town with quirky shops and of course the gorgeous sea. We grabbed a map of the town and headed back in land a bit to go for a short hike to stretch ourselves out. The hike proved to be fairly unexciting, only interesting thing of note was the quiet…. Not many woodlands are this quiet! For those interested, the bush is very similar to ours~ if you’ve hiked a bush track in our NP then you’ve hiked in this part of SA.

Late in the day saw us drive into Mossel Bay. MB started out by completely underwhelming us again… Think Palm Beach QLD and you’ve seen the first part of MB… We kept driving into the downtown and that’s when it improved out of site. MB is one of the oldest settlements in SA and it shows! Beautiful old buildings perched high on the rocks away from the ocean. Our accommodation (thanks to the tourist office) was an oldish hotel perched on the right on the rocks… The views from the room were incredible~ Massive waves crashing right In front of you! Out of this world! We grabbed ourselves a beer and spent the rest of the afternoon watching the sun set and the waves crashing…. Truly a very memorable afternoon in MB!
