2: Sparkling sunshine

11.09.2012 – 11.09.2012 sunny 24 °C

One of the good (and sometimes bad) things about staying in a hostel is that you inevitably get woken up early (because someone always needs to get happening earlier than you do!) So good for me, because it meant that my day got off to a cracking start nice and early. After getting myself presentable I headed down for some brekky and was fortunate enough to sit down with two of the other ladies from my dorm who were also having brekky, Sara and Renee. We got chatting, which culminated in me agreeing to go out for dinner with Renee that evening at a seafood restaurant  (I am in Nova Scotia so of course I’m going to be eating plenty of seafood). I won’t dwell for hours on Renee and Sara but briefly; Renee is an Aussie who now lives in Calgary and is on a holiday over here in NS and Sara is a Canadian lady who is studying at the nearby Dalhousie University. Both ladies are really lovely and hopefully I’ll get more chances to hang out with them both.

Anyway, today was not one of them (well at least not til this evening). I started my morning by heading down to the Halifax waterfront to see the sites of the city. Halifax is a really pretty little city. The city is perched on a rocky promontory above the Halifax harbour. It is an old fishing village that has sprawled out over the years to now be the biggest city in the Maritimes (still a pretty small city though). Today the sun is shining, the sky is blue and the water is sparkling.. Very pretty! The main foreshore is filled with old boats (part of the Maritime Museum) some of which double as site seeing vessels. I spent my morning wandering the foreshore before I headed back up the hill to the main part of town to post some mail and find myself something for lunch (Subway). Halifax reminds me a little bit of Stockholm, in that many of the buildings are brightly coloured, they are built quite close together and they all face out over the harbour.

I spent the remainder of my afternoon sitting down in the common room blogging until it was time for Renee and I to head out for dinner. We found ourselves down at one of the top seafood places in town, The Five Fisherman. I had a piece of Haddock with chips and Renee had some calamari with chips.. Both were pretty good! My first taste of North Atlantic seafood has started well!

We also teamed up with another lady who was sitting by herself in the restaurant from Canada who joined us for a drink at a local pub after dinner. All in all a pretty awesome evening with some great company and really great food and some ok entertainment at the pub!

  1. It is great the way you meet up with people for dinner and then expand your group by collecting others as your night moves on!
